Ecology House is the first HUD-funded apartment building in the United States designed, constructed, and maintained for people with multiple chemical sensitivity and environmental illness. Completed in 1994 in San Rafael, the 11 one-bedroom apartments were built without the glues, fibers, or sealers of conventional construction, with raw materials evaluated by a sniff team before installation. Sited beside the San Francisco Bay for the cleanest possible urban air and supported by HUD's Section 811 program, the property remains a touchstone in accessible housing, cited in academic and advocacy literature.
