Living Our Values, Introducing Aloha

Aloha is hello. Aloha is goodbye. It is meeting one another with care, without expecting anything in return. Aloha is presence: a way of showing up with respect, compassion, and responsibility for others. At EAH Housing, we are introducing Aloha as a core value because how we do our work matters as much as what we build.
Aloha is often recognized as a greeting, but in the Hawaiian language and culture, it carries a deeper meaning, one that shapes how people relate to one another. In 1986, Hawai’i recognized the Aloha Spirit in law, describing it as a way of relating through respect, compassion, and a commitment to the common good.
At EAH Housing, this understanding of care and responsibility is reflected in our Core Values, which guide how we serve residents, partner with communities, and work with one another every day. These values are expressed through the PEACE framework: Passion, Ethics, Aloha, Collaboration, and Excellence, which provides a shared foundation for how we show up across the organization.
Within this framework, Aloha holds particular significance. This value asks us to be fully present in our work and in our relationships. The word itself reflects that intention: alo, meaning presence or shared space, and ha, meaning breath or life force. Together, aloha speaks to expressions of care given without expectation and respect rooted in relationships. For an organization working across different cultures and geographies, this meaning matters.
For EAH, practicing aloha is not abstract. Aloha is expressed in everyday moments, in how conversations are approached and how decisions are made, especially when the work is complex or challenging. In this way, it becomes a guide for moving through our work with intention and humanity.
