Honolulu Superstars Awarded Scholarships

Eah Housing
The start of a new school year comes with many familiar items: fresh pencils, new teachers, backpacks, binders and new friends. For four teenagers at EAH Housing properties in Honolulu, the excitement of September came with much more than the familiar items. Kukui Gardens resident Jenny Liu recieved a competitve $1,000 scholarship based on her G.P.A., extracurricular activities, and community service. And Vivian Lee, Jodie Miu, and Anna Wen, all residents of Kukui Tower, were honored with awards and scholarships for their participation in the annual “Drug Free Kids” Calendar Contest.

For this year's calendar contest, contestants submitted drawings based on the theme "Become a superstar, I can do anything I believe." Check out the award winning posters below: (L to R, drawings by Anna Wen, Jodie Miu, Vivan Lee)

Vivian, Jodie, and Anna are friends at the EAH Housing community Kukui Tower in Honolulu, where all three of their families have found an affordable home to raise their children. Both Vivian and Jodie won national honors, along with a $1,000 scholarship, and their artwork will appear in calendars nationwide. Anna received an honorable mention. Vivian has won a top prize two years in a row, and says she hopes her drawing will “inspire other young people to make good choices.” Bilingual Jodie hopes to learn more languages and become an interpreter, and Anna is a budding photographer who loves computers.

Scholarship winner Jenny Liu lives at the EAH Housing community Kukui Gardens with her family, and is currently a freshman at the University of Hawaii. She is studying biology, and plans on going to medical school to become a pediatrician.

“Our work with NAHMA, and many other partner organizations, is an important part of how we expand opportunities for growth, exploration, education and support for children and youth at EAH Housing communities,” said Dianna Ingle, Vice President of Real Estate Management. “From homework clubs to one-on-one mentoring, our Resource Coordinators go the extra mile for our kids. It’s wonderful to have the chance to work with NAHMA and see youth like Vivian, Jodie, Anna, and Jenny receive the support they need for a brighter future they are actively creating.”
