August 19, 2022 – Non-profit housing development organization, EAH Housing, in partnership with community stakeholders, has started construction on The Laurel, a 58-unit affordable and supportive housing apartment community in Santa Monica, CA.

Located at 1413 Michigan Ave., the four-story building will offer studio apartments for individuals between 30% and 50% of area median income. Residents will benefit from a laundry facility on each floor, a common area deck and 800 square feet of community space.

The project will also incorporate historic cultural landmark Nikkei Hall, which will be restored and serve as the community use space. The building’s entry and woodwork will be preserved and the Japanese garden restored.

“While demand for affordable housing far exceeds supply, this project will help make a dent in Santa Monica’s affordability crisis,” said EAH Housing CEO Laura Hall. “The project’s many stakeholders worked tirelessly to create a housing solution tailored to the unique needs of homeless individuals.”
