A New Home for Kūpuna: Celebrating Aloha Iā Halewilikō

140 affordable apartments for kūpuna bring new life to historic ʻĀiea Sugar Mill site
EAH Housing celebrated the grand opening of Aloha Iā Halewilikō in December 2025, a 140-unit affordable rental community for kūpuna 62+ in ʻAiea, Oʻahu. The $62 million development transforms a 3.5-acre parcel on the site of the historic ʻĀiea Sugar Mill, vacant for more than 25 years, into vibrant senior housing.
Located at 99-385 Pōhai Place next to ʻAiea Public Library, the community offers 83 studio apartments and 56 one-bedroom apartments.
"Aloha Iā Halewilikō honors the legacy of our island's plantation era, when communities came together for the common good," said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. "This new community reflects that same spirit while giving back to the kūpuna who helped build Hawaiʻi."
Governor Josh Green emphasized the broader impact: "This project represents more than housing—it represents stability, dignity, and health. Affordable housing serves both as an economic and health care solution, and partnerships like this are essential to meeting the needs of our kūpuna."
Community Features & Services
The community features a fitness room, landscaped walking paths, resident gardens, and digital literacy learning opportunities. An on-site resident services coordinator connects residents to local services, and EAH Housing partnered with Lanakila Pacific to provide kūpuna services including access to their Meals on Wheels Program.
The $62 million project was made possible through collaboration between EAH Housing, the City and County of Honolulu (which provided the land), the Hawaiʻi Housing Finance and Development Corporation, Bank of Hawaiʻi, and U.S. Bank.
Aloha Iā Halewilikō joins EAH Housing's growing Hawaiʻi portfolio of over 2,700 units across 23 properties on Oʻahu, Maui, and Kauaʻi.
