Hale Nā Koa ʻO Hanakahi Celebrates Grand Opening in Hilo

Hale Nā Koa ʻO Hanakahi, Hawaiʻi's first affordable senior rental community for veterans, celebrated its grand opening with a traditional Hawaiian blessing on October 14, 2025, in Hilo. The $58 million development provides 91 one-bedroom homes for kūpuna 62 and older, with preference given to veterans and their surviving spouses.
Developed by EAH Housing in collaboration with the Hawaiʻi Island Veterans Memorial, Inc., the community transforms a 5.6-acre parcel at the corner of West Kawili and Kapiʻolani Streets into a place designed to provide security, dignity, and connection.
Hale Nā Koa ʻO Hanakahi, loosely translated as "House of the Warrior," honors both Hilo's beloved ancient chief Hanakahi, known for bringing peace and prosperity, and the modern warriors who have served our country.
"We are proud to offer these new residences for kūpuna on Hawaiʻi Island," said Karen Seddon, regional vice president at EAH Housing. "This project reflects our ongoing commitment to creating affordable housing opportunities across the islands."
Governor Josh Green emphasized the importance for neighbor island seniors: "Every new affordable unit makes a difference, especially for kūpuna on the neighbor islands. This community ensures residents can age with dignity and peace of mind, while families know their loved ones are well cared for and safe."
A Community Designed for Connection and Wellness
The community features amenities designed to foster social connection and wellness, including a community center with lounge, coffee bar, and fitness room; a multi-purpose room with kitchen for social and educational activities; a community garden and dog park; landscaped walking paths; four laundry facilities; and 157 parking spaces. The development achieved LEED Silver certification for sustainability.

Earlier in 2024, Hale Nā Koa ʻO Hanakahi was honored as the "Best Seniors Project" in Affordable Housing Finance's 2024 Readers' Choice Awards, a national recognition celebrating developments that have made a meaningful impact on their residents and surrounding neighborhoods.
